pulpit.jpg (80963 bytes) The pulpit next to the chancel was presented by Canon McCormick in memory of his father William McCormick, M.P. a famous civil engineer and Member of Parliament for the City from 1860 to 1865. The figure in the centre of the pulpit is that of St. Columba. Above the pulpit is the gift of the Cross of Nails from Coventry Cathedral as the Cathedral is a Centre for Peace and Reconciliation and is an active member of the Community of the Cross of Nails.

chancel window.jpg (194120 bytes) The Chancel itself was built in 1887 to the original design of the Planters in 1633 as the old foundations were found when digging the new ones in 1887. The fine east window is in memory of Bishop Higgin and depicts the ascension.

reredos.jpg (37034 bytes)

The reredos of Caen stone was the gift of the clergy ordained in the Cathedral and the wings were presented by Mrs. F. E. Corscaden in memory of her sister. The six mosaics represent the four Saints, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John together with St. Patrick and St. Columb which is second from the right.

On the floor of the Chancel is a beautiful carpet which is handmade and depicts the Coats of Arms of The Hon. The Irish Society, the See of Derry and the Cathedral. It was presented by John and William Michaels in 1951. They also presented the splendid altar frontals which were designed by Professor A. E. Richardson, President of the Royal Academy, London. The two yellow flags were captured from the French during the Siege on 6th May 1689. (O.S.)The silk has been renewed in 1788,1838,1888 and 1968 but the gold wire work and poles are original. The original tassels hang in the Chapter House.
