The Nave

As you enter the Cathedral and proceed up the Nave you can see the splendid roof put on in 1823. The corbels represent the various heads of Bishops and Deans over the years and are listed below:

Beginning at the top left (North East) corner:-

William Alexander. Bishop, 1867. Tr. to Armagh, 1896. d. 1911.

John Bramhall. Bishop, 1634. Tr. to Armagh, 1661. d. 1663.

George Walker. Rector of Donoughmore. Governor of Derry, 1689. Killed at Battle of Boyne, 1690.

George Stone. Bishop of Derry, 1745. Tr. to Armagh, 1747. d.1768.

William King. Bishop, 1690. Tr. to Dublin, 1703. d. 1729.

St. George Ashe. Bishop of Derry, 1717. d. 1717.

George Berkeley. Dean of Derry, 1724. Bishop of Cloyne, 1734. d. 1753.

William Barnard. Bishop of Derry, 1747. d. 1768.

From South West corner:-

Henry Downes. Bishop of Derry, 1726. d. 1734.

Frederick Hervey. Earl of Bristol. Bishop of Derry, 1768. d. 1803.

William Higgin. Bishop of Derry, 1853. d. 1867.

William Knox. Bishop of Derry, 1803. d. 1831.

Charles Hickman. Bishop of Derry, 1703. d. 1713.

Richard Ponsonby. Bishop of Derry, 1831. d. 1853.

Ezekiel Hopkins. Bishop of Derry, 1681. d. 1690.

Andrew Ferguson Smyly. Dean of Derry, 1888. d. 1897.

there are 214 in The Cathedral and no two the same.

They were carved by a father and son whose names
have been lost in the mists of time.
